International Paper Approves Modernization Project at Eastover, S.C., Mill

December 14, 2004 -  International Paper today announced it will modernize the company's Eastover, S.C., mill No. 1 paper machine. The project will involve various upgrades to enhance product quality and improve efficiency.

"The Eastover mill is one of the most efficient producers of uncoated freesheet paper in the world, and we are excited about the benefits the machine modernization will generate for our customers and our shareholders," said Rob Amen, International Paper President. "The project will enhance the print and smoothness characteristics of our paper to better satisfy our customers' long-term needs. Particularly in the area of direct mail, our customers will benefit from the enhanced ability to print envelopes with high- end graphics and marketing messages. The upgrade will allow us to grow with these customers well into the future."

The Eastover mill is one of nine U.S. uncoated freesheet mills within International Paper. The facility has two paper machines that produce white paper used primarily for envelopes, office paper and forms and one pulp machine that produces market pulp. The company expects to invest approximately $125 million in the project and anticipates it will be completed in the fourth quarter of 2005.
